Esports Officially Becomes a Sport at the 2022 Asian Games

Unlike the 2021 Asian Games and 2021 SEA Games, esports has officially become a medal sport.

“I hope that esports will add value to the Asian Games and I am sure that will happen in the future, during the 2022 Asian Games and even in the future,” said OCA Asian Games Director Haider Farman in a statement.

In the general assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in Muscat this week, it is certain that this will officially become a sport for the 2022 Asian Games.

Efforts to Turn Esports into a Sport

Efforts to make this sport in the Olympics have so far faltered. This is because the corona virus pandemic has made changes to the rules at the 2022 Asian Games. So the organizers must explore new ideas.

Quoted from Japan Times, This sport is one of the popular events that enliven the 2021 Asian Games in Jakarta. While the 2021 SEA Games in the Philippines made esports as a medal match.

At that time, esports matches were still in the exhibition stage and for the first time they were competed at the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games.

Approved by the 2022 Asian Games Organizing Committee

The organizing committee of the Guangzhou Asian Games announced that esports has officially become a sport through their social media accounts.

This is reinforced by the decision of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) which approved the proposal submitted by the organizing committee of the 2022 Asian Games. This submission occurred during the 39th Asian Olympic Council General Assembly meeting in Muscat, Oman.

The proposal contains an application for submitting esports and breakdancing as a sport in the 2022 Asian Games.

The Asian Olympic Council finally categorizes esports as a mind sport and break dance as a dance sport. However, until now, the organizing committee has not provided detailed information regarding the rules and games that will be competed at the 2022 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China later.

With the inclusion of esports as an official sport at the 2022 Asian Games, it means that gaming recognized as a sport in the leading multi-sport event in the future. In addition, esports has also been welcomed by the Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF), which consists of 45 countries and regions.

“This result is a step forward in the right direction,” the AESF said in a statement.

According to AESF, community esports has made efforts over the last few years to include esports as an official sport. Not only bring e-sports into the limelight of the mainstream, but also one step closer to the biggest stage of all, which is the Olympics.

This sport has been fought to be present at the 2022 Asian Games since the exhibition at the 2021 Asian Games. Previously esports threatened not to be contested again. This is because the games being competed are considered violent by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) organization.

The 2022 Asian Games are scheduled to take place in Guangzhou, China from 10-25 September 2022.
